Tabs are 8 spaces (or more precisely from the current position until the
next tab stop which occurs every 8 spaces). Using tabs when you mean
something else is not "good style".

An editor that supports indentation is hardly "special".

Using 8 spaces per indentation level is too much. Using a tab per
indentation level when you don't mean 8 spaces, and consequently abusing
tabs for different nonstandard things in different files, does not
"plain work".
