Many of us have been using essentially the same patch with 1080i content
since October. For me it makes mplayer's 1080i output to my LCD display
look just as smooth as the cable box. Without the patch, 1080i output is
clearly only 30 fps. This looks acceptable for filmed content but for
1080i video (sports, talk shows) it's very obvious that the screen is
being updated at half the speed it should be without this change.

The only significant feature the other patch has is field dropping. If
the video gets behind the audio, it first drops fields instead of entire
frames since this is more subtle than dropping entire frames. If
dropping fields doesn't work, it will start dropping entire frames.
