That would be me and it was done on purpose. Explanation:
mplayer -v still shows dev-CVS-date
pre8 is only in RPM package version string, like this:
1.0pre8-0.7.20060418
0.x is to indicate, that it's not a full release, which will have
1.0pre8-1
as version. This ensures smooth upgrades for RPM users. There'll be
no confusion, don't worry.
Not to mention this is in accordance with Fedora Extras packaging rules.
