As long as you don't violate a copyright, there should be no problem
with using information from anywhere else. You should probably reference
the original source as a courtesy and because it could be updated at any
time.

The ffmpeg-devel mailing list is more or less the definitive place; much
of mplayer's codec- and container-related code is in ffmpeg (via
libavcodec and libavformat), and occasionally an effort is made to move
something useful from mplayer to ffmpeg so it can be re-used by other
projects and be implemented with less code duplication.
