It is only partially supported. ASS and SSA are both supported because
ASS _IS_ SSA except with additional features including movement and
varying colors. The support for SSA/ASS in mplayer is currently limited
(as far as I can tell) to just the text and timing as well as I think
positioning.

mkv is matroska. If you would like, I have mkv anime episodes that I
could transfer to you to give you an example of the format of them.
Also, on the mkv website there are sample videos.
