Just stumbled over this patch again, it works for me on my PowerBook
with a Debian unstable system with the following gcc:

gcc (GCC) 4.0.2 20050821 (prerelease) (Debian 4.0.1-6)

I don't believe this patch is necessary, so I suggest we drop it unless
the patch sender can come up with some convincing arguments.
