Fedora/Redhat even crippled KDE and shipped gcc 3.96. Should Mplayer do
something only because some distribution does it?

The problem is *not* that P4 is not the fastest CPU. The problem is that
P4 is a very special CPU which needs completely different optimization
than any other x86 CPU. And Intel is moving away from the P4
architecture.

Well, switching to Pentium3 or Athlon would be more future-oriented and
would not harm, too.
