I run a dual-boot AMD-64, and this problem happends at least on my 
32-bits debian SID. I didn't have time to test on my ubuntu-64, but I 
guess that might be a good idea to check that out...

All that said, I'm puzzled that it does work with the proposed change to 
codecs.conf... That doesn't make sense to me.
