I don't see how this patch is going to help.
If I understand it right it will show the osd status disable on start
of mplayer or
when switching osd to compleatly disabled.

The problem is that we may not want to see osd level when mplayer
starts. Especially if we have disabled it with that purpose. (If you
want to record clip on VCR you don't want any alien signs).

Solving the above problem lead to another, how to understand what is
the state. So we cycle until we get OSD disabled text. Not a big
improovement IMHO.

So I would recoment another solution.
How about: on startup when osdlevel == 1 to show subtitle status?
If you like you can put subtitle=yes/no on the right corner and show
it always when osdlevel>0. Your choice.
