My apologies if this should rather go to mplayer-users but I did not want
to let another VIA Unichrome support thread die without any result.

Although I cannot really comment on the patch, I just wanted to vote 
for inclusion (or at least encourage Ivor to incorporate the 
enhancements proposed in this thread). It really worked out of the box
on my SuSE 9.3 (X.org 6.8.2, Kernel 2.6.11.4). No need to compile X or 
kernel modules, just patch and recompile MPlayer, enable DRI in
the X server and everything works fine.
