Well, maybe originally it wasn't, but these days it is used for
that too, and nobody seems to complain about it. ID_PAUSED is a
good example. So printing the messages you want based on -identify
and using the ID_ prefix I think would be a good idea. How useful
these messages really are is a different question.

KPlayer is pretty good at keeping up with MPlayer state even with
the current MPlayer. Some things are quite difficult to get right,
especially when seeking it is in general nearly impossible to
know for sure when the seek has actually happened.
