I'd completely forgotten about this tidbit. My new opinion is that it's
a bad idea to fiddle with the deblocking params solely as a means to
remove blocks in the source, and this technique shouldn't be reccommended
in the man page. It's far more important for the man page to emphasize
that the default blocking params are almost always optimal. And when
they're not optimal, the best offset is +-1.

There is some interesting interaction between postprocessing and the
in-loop filter. In a nutshell, I find that any postprocessing which
causes blur (deblocking, deringing, and denoise) is a little bit less
helpful with H.264. Maybe. This topic probably deserves to be addressed
somewhere, but not in the man page imho.
