[MPlayer-dev-eng] What is autosync being used for in practice?

Besides audio drivers which don't give us accurate free space 
information, what else is the -autosync option trying to achieve?

Sorry if this sounds like a really obvious question, but I'm 
investigating some ideas to overcome the audio driver clock problem and 
not sure how much this overlaps with the autosync intentions...
