Actually, if you are clever, you can get this same functionality with
the current, standard and messy, mplayer.

mplayer -quiet -ao pcm -aofile /dev/fd/3 3>&1 1>&2 | lame

In case your patch doesn't get accepted, you can script mplayer like
this to get pipes to work properly.
