i looked in the doc but only found brief explanation... it seems more a way to 
_exclude_ parts of a video than a way of extracting a piece of it... and it 
doesn't look as handy as what could be done with a "realtime" interface... 

is there some more precise info than what is found in 
MPlayer-1.0pre4/DOCS/HTML/en/edl.html
