first of all congratulations to everbody who participates to this great piece
of software which enlightens my day since it exists!

mplayer is a jewel on the gnu/linux workstation, and i really want to
congratulate you all for this!

now one idiotic usage i would like to make while viewing so much videos
(mostly oldies, public domain stuff) is that :

i would love to be able to cut and save some small portions of the videos i'm
viewing, grabbing a scene here and there... so i could reuse those sequences
later, this could be describded as "vampling" (sampling but with
videos ;)...

i was wondering: how complicated would it be to do so with mplayer? during a
pause a filename could be chosen, when the pause is released the stream could
be written while being read, and on another pause, the file could be
closed... ?

sounds simple like that but i wonder if it is :

- really as easy as it sounds?
- doable? or even doable as an external program or plugin?
- projected as a feature of a next version in some kind?

thanx for your great piece of software and for your kind attention, and all my
humble excuses if you find this idea totally stupid!

jz
