And it turns out that yes, that was apparently the problem, at least
with the more recent (i.e. third) form of his patch. (I'm not as
familiar with tr as I'd like to be; it would have solved several
problems I've had in other contexts in the past, for at least one of
which I wrote an entire separate program.)
It still seems a little odd, because looking at the patch via less
showed nothing out of the ordinary, whereas usually when I use less to
view a file which contains what I believe are carriage-return
characters, they get displayed as reverse-video ^M pairs instead of as
line breaks; is it that that is actually a single-byte CRLF character?
