1)

2) See TOOLS/subfont-c/Makefile
There's this line:

LDLIBS=-lm ../../osdep/timer-lx.o $(shell freetype-config --libs)

the correct line to work on darwin is this:

LDLIBS=-lm ../../osdep/timer-darwin.o $(shell freetype-config --libs)
-liconv
