in case this is helpful.

i have gentoo ~x86,
an acer800 laptop with the centrino chipset => snd-intel8x0 alsa
driver..
(as it comes from the 2.6.4-ck kernel).

i also have problems with the -ao alsa... sometimes there is a
scratch-like sound (like on an old LP) in the audio...i am not sure when
did this begin... but it was approx the same time when mplayer-cvs
switched to -ao "alsa". loading the oss emu, and using -ao oss solves
the problem.

trouble is, that i cannot that easily reproduce it.
but for example watching a video for 10-15 minutes triggers the broblem.
and if i switch to -ao oss it vanishes...
