Yes, that worked.  MPlayer dev-CVS-040128-05:00-3.3.2 built without error on gcc 3.3.2 and is running fine on Linux 2.6.1.

It's rather interesting to be viewing a streaming video from the linux commandline without X11 running.  And it's all from drivers in the 2.6.1 kernel (no patches, no 3rd-party modules).  The drivers include: framebuffer support, mtrr support, alsa, /dev/rtc, CMI8338 sound card, i740 AGP video card.

I just boot linux with the frambuffer enabled and enter this commandline to play a stream on the console:
mplayer -vo fbdev -ao alsa1x -playlist someplaylist.asx

And it's running very nicely even on this 400Mhz Celeron PII box.
