I just checked, and cannot see where Gentoo force -fPIC - they do
remove -fPIC from the latest ebuilds (in case the user did add it to
his CFLAGS), although I cannot see why, as CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS are unset
anyhow before ./configure && make ...
