Well supposedly divx.com has a _license_ for the patent, meaning that
no one will challenge your rights to use it to play movies. But this
doesn't change the fact that numerous (invalid by obviousness and
prior art, but still standing) patents apply to mpeg4 (and all other
codecs) and thus make it "patent-encumbered".
