I dont know the history of project like you.

seems that this could become an issue using such an old code base without 
being able to change.

okay I never sent any patches (improvements not just cosmetics) to avifile.
never even knew we should do so.

I thought it was dead myself because
24.07.2003 was last time there was any news

but there are still some CVS changes to the code.
unsure what they were or if they require syncing into mplayer.
