This is bloat, IMHO.

You can do that in other layer outside MPlayer. This app could handle
all this things and even support text strings to be rendered... there
you handle the z-index and stuff, then give mplayer it in the right
way.

Sure.
But in meanwhile one can emulate those things using an external app.
