I've been using -vf expand with various cvs versions over the past
week.  Specifically, -vf scale=800:-2,expand=800:600.  And while mplayer
sometimes barfs, I mostly assume it's due to the code I'm hacking and
not mplayer's fault.  Things seem pretty stable to me.
