If you include the date of the checkout (or the compile, even more 
general) you should have so many possible "perpetrators" that it would 
be impossible to point the finger at any one of them. Or you could do 
like Mozilla and have it 1.0rc2 at the release, and 1.0rc2+ between 
releases.
