Rich,

are you aware of some volunteer willing to write a DShow filter for
Windows ? And what about plugins for Nan/VirtualDub also?

If not, then the new format will only serve Linux users.

I will not discuss whether there are more Windows or Linux users out there,
but i suspect that the average Windows user will not even know that this new

file format exists, no matter who good and awesome it is.

my 0.02€...

Subject: [MPlayer-dev-eng] MPCF proposal

Somehow the MPCF discussion seems to have died off... So here's what I
propose:

1) Anyone who has remaining complaints or issues that haven't yet been
resolved with MPCF should post them now, and they should be discussed.

2) We should finally decide on a name everyone likes. Current
proposals include egg, coola, 10l, nut, ...?

3) We should ask Moritz Bunkus to write the muxer and demuxer for
mencoder/mplayer based on the current spec plus any changes agreed
upon in phase 1.

4) Experimental version of MPCF should be tested by developers and
users before declaring the spec official/final, and any major issues
that arise should be fixed. Hopefully changes can be made in a way
that doesn't break compatibility with the experimental version, but
this isn't absolutely necessary since the experimental version will be
explicitly marked as experimental/do not use yet for archival
purposes.

5) MEncoder should be improved to support variable-fps output, and the
video filter layer should be updated to provide a way for filters to
adjust timestamps on images. These changes will allow framecopy
without A/V desync when frames would have to be skipped (not possible
with framecopy) to maintain fixed framerate, and will allow the
de-telecine filter to vary the framerate back and forth between
24 fps and 30 fps as needed. In the long term, it should also make it
possible for filters to smoothly adjust framerate in mplayer, e.g. for
converting 30 fps interlaced to 60 fps progressive (-vop tfields).

Comments? Let's get this thing done!

Rich
