I don't have such problems (tested on Mandrake 9.0, Debian Woody, FreeBSD 4.5 
& 5.0-RELEASE), on both en and fr versions. Maybe it's a 'locales' problem ?

as Diego said, feel free to mail me in private if you still have this problem.

for the localized man page, it works well on Mandrake, but under Debian I have 
to type "man -L fr mplayer", or else i get the english version.
