Personaly, I've never used "eq". It can be as fast as it wants, but... 
I've not yet found a video requiring brightness/contrast adjustment. 
Usually they're properly mastered.

For a very long time I used DGA and XFree's gamma controls. But it was 
anoying, since I had to go changing from 2.0 (videos) to 2.5 (desktop) 
and, even worse, I had flickering. (never got DGA's doblebuffering to work)

I tried to get overlay hardware gamma, but... XV seems completely 
unsuitable for this (I'm talking about the interface itself, not 
mplayer's implementation) and it doesn't look like known specs for 
rage128 allow independent gamma.

So, I use eq2 (and now even more, in fact I've aded it to mplayer's 
config file) to correct my monitor's gamma and play the videos at gamma 
2.0 so that they look line on TV.

If I could get XV to obey XFree's gamma settings, I'd never use any of 
those filters.
