Thanks.   That works when using mplaying but it doesn't when using 
mencoder:

  mencoder interview.rm -mc 5 -o test.avi \
      -oac pcm -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mjpeg:vqscale=2

The whole video plays slow and it duplicates an unusual number of frames.
