I now have 4 or 5 different giflib source trees on my hard drive, just
to check such odd situations.  I apologize.  If you don't want to link
against any such library, then please add --disable-gif when running
configure.  Also note that since this library is no longer being
maintained, most of the "versions" out there are due to poor packaging
jobs by distributions.
