You're right. This is not the exact phonetical translation (which would 
be matrioshka). We decided that matrioshka was too complicated a word. 
So we invented a new one. Maybe it exists in other languages (it seems 
like). But it's hard to find a simple word that doesn't exist in other 
languages. So...
