The check is in configure.  Theora support will just be disabled with
the older version.  With the current state of Theora's interface
changing frequently without any beta version released, that's the sanest
thing I can come up with.  Nobody is supposed to use alpha1 anyway.
Actually nobody is supposed to use any version of Theora.  The Readme
explicitely states that it should not be used for anything else than
playing around.  They even wrote that it should *not* be used for
implementing MPlayer/Xine support.

The main purpose of vd_theora.c currently is to help people test Theora
and to be ready as soon as Theora Beta1 is released.  It would be crazy
to develop backwards compatability with all the subtle changes that are
taking place.  BTW also the bitstream format still changes.  Today's
libtheora won't decode movies which were encoded yesterday.
