Hi!
You are right, SNDCTL_DSP_STEREO is NOP
for i810 chipset (that's what I have) in the kernel.
An oss driver for that Zaurus palmtop would be needed to,
because that kind of doesn't support any of the ioctl's :] 
Well there is sdl too actually on the zaurus.
