Hi,

Ok, there was some discussion in the past about replacing/rewritting
the currently useless & outdated encoding.html, mostly on IRC.

the current TOC:

it needs some extending, imho we should add at least 2 big sections.
myidea about a new TOC:
- introduction
  - what is it
  - major features
  - known limitations (avi out only etc)
- compilation
  - optional libs, etc
- codecs
  - video codecs
    - lavc (options, tricks, rcommended parameters, realtime vs hq encoding etc)
    - xvid (-//-)
    - divx4/divx5 (-//-)
    - rawrgb
    - copy (limitations, recommended use etc)
    - frameno (referenec to 3-pass encoding)
  - audio codecs
    - mp3 (cbr/ abr/ vbr etc)
    - pcm
    - copy (limitations, recommended use etc)
- filters
  - video filters
    - crop, expand, scale
    - postproc, deinterlacing
    - noise filtering, blur, sharpen etc
    - eq filters (color management)
  - audio filters
    - resampling
    - volume/volnorm/eq
    - etc
- encoding tutorial
  - recommendations for crop/scaling (16-aligned w/h, aspect ratio etc)
  - bitrate calculation, vbr vs. cbr etc
  - multi pass encoding
  - dvd ripping (-streamcopy vs play_title vs dvdbackuip vs -ovc copy -oac copy)
- other uses
  - cutting, appending files (-ss, -end-at etc)
  - fixing broken avis
  - extracting VOB subtitles
  - encoding from image sequence (-mf)
  - creating vcd/svcd (mencvcd)
  - TV capturing/recording

What do you think?

Also, I want to collect people to write these sections.
I myself subscribing for video filters, unless someone else wants it :)
Also i can help with multipass encoding / bitrate calculation too.

I need help especially for the tutorial section (tips, recommendations for
bitrates/sizes etc) and for detailed codec parameters (effect,
advantages/disadvantages of encoding modes, B frames, various options etc).
