I have better idea. Why only pcm master, why don't controll all the other options
(Bass,treble, echo etc...)
Really i would like to have few costum controls that could be tuned:)
e.g. My really old Yamaha 719 (opl3sa) uses 2 mixer devices and the master is on the 
first and the pcm is on the second. I can not contol both even if you restore the master volume.
I have read the oss specs and it supports string names, what is the state of the other ao_*?
In my dream i see it like this:

volume1=/dev/mixer1:master
volume2=/dev/mixer2:pcm
volume3=/dev/mixer1:bass
