The only valid changes I see are the iconv and socket stuff.

- vidix should be disabled from configure if not working (not from Makefile)
- mandir path should not be changed inside makefile, but by adding a configure 
switch like --mandir, like most standard configure support it
- don't use nm, it may generate pages of output and is not equal to ldd call, 
if no ldd equivalent is available, just leave it out
- why do you add /usr/lib and /usr/include to extradirs? it should be 
default...
