the problem I see with your ranlib stuff is, that it needs modification of
Makefiles from all the libs, so external libs need modifications to their
Makefiles aswell, which is not needed with my solution, although mine is
probably not the cleanest. However we coukd change the MacOS check to use
ifeq TARGET_OS instead of the check inside the shellscript.
