I think we are misunderstading each other: 
  a) If I encode the stream using -ovc copy to generate a stream of
     jpegs there is no problem playing it. 
  b) If I encode the jpegs using -ovc divx 4, there is no problem
     playing the resulting file. I have to use the rgb2bgr filter though
     to get the rigth colors. maybe this should be made the default?
  c) I cannot use the -ovc lavc codecs since the _mencoder_ segfaults.
  
  
  x) (unrelate) I do not know how to use -ovc vfw

I hope this clarifies things.
