OK, I solved this. It appears the problem was between gcc3-3.0.4 from RH7.2
and glibc-2.2.5 from RH7.3. I've been given the location of unofficial
gcc3-3.1 packages (made by RedHat's gcc guy), downloaded them and rebuilt
mplayer. Now this strange dependency is gone.
