I think artsd was done by someone who knows KDE development. Most of the 
mplayer team doesn't run KDE if I'm not mistaken...

As for ESD - good question. You might want to ask the GNOME team to support it 
(weak, very weak chances), although I heard that ESD is going to be 
depricated in favor of something else (don't know what).
