I tested it with gawk, mawk, original-awk (what ever that is)
nawk and awk (last both from solaris).

gawk:          works
mawk:          works
original awk:  works
nawk(solaris): works
awk(solaris):  doesn't work (does not know functions)

I also dont like the check (infact it isnt really one)
It should probe for an suitable awk. Ie trying for a
gawk, then for mawk, then nawk and last awk itself.
There should be IMHO also an option to define a path
do an awk.
