generating just the needed chars seems to be a good idea for mplayer too, and 
i doubt that mmx optimization alone could reduce 1min to something 
acceptable, imho even 5 sec startup time is too long

btw there is still the ttf -> bitmap stuff which is outside of mplayer and 
which needs some time too, allthough i dunno how much ...
