It can be determined from IFO files AFAIK. I'm not sure, but maybe libdvdread's
IFO parsing ability would be able to get this information as well. And afaik
ogle uses libdvdread as well. Or not :)

Nice, but imho it doesn't worth to apply NOW because it will be ugly hack
in libvo (btw, I haven't seen the patch yet :). libvo2 shoudl provide
more easy and natural envirnoment to implement displaying DVD subs.
