it does, maybe you aren't using current cvs version of mplayer:

anyways you gain a lot more speed (20 to 30%) when choosing ffdivx codec (you 
need libavcodec from ffmpeg cvs).
DivX4Linux first version was very fast, current one is slow, but you can try 
July versiob of it, it's even faster bthen ffdivx.

Anyways first grab CVS version of MPlayer and RTFM for more info.
