What would be really nice is a distro that would boot from USB drive instead
of CD and have mplayer on it so that you could still use the DVD drive to
play movies on computers with only one optical drive.

Most of the mplayer linux live distros will load the whole file system into
the memory (rmadisk?). Therefore you can unload the CDRom from the optical
driver and use it for playing a movie from the drive.
