[MPlayer-cygwin] compiling mplayer : pthread problems

hello-

i'm trying to compile mplayer under cygwin (latest version installed last
night), and when i issue

./configure --disable-mpdvdkit --with-extraincdir=/usr/include/mingw

i get halted with an error

Error: Lib pthread not found (needed by Windows and networking stuff)

i've also tried the --cc=gcc-2 flag to not use gcc 3.2, but instead use
2.95.3-10.

upon inspecting the configure.log, i find the error (regardless of whether
i'm using gcc 3 or gcc 2)

gcc: unrecognized option `-pthread'

i get a very similar error when trying to staticly link everything in.

does anybody have any recommendations, by any chance?
