Quick test:

		   time       size
Full clone:    1:09.120        60M     
--depth 1 :      14.751        35M
SVN       :      17.172        55M
snapshot  :      11.417        27M

(size is the disk usage of the downloaded directory; "snapshot" is using
http://git.videolan.org/?p=ffmpeg.git;a=snapshot;h=HEAD;sf=tgz
with curl piped to tar, it only have the working files, not the Git index)
