I dont think this flaming back and forth is going to help

the change was wrong and i think it should be reverted
a different solution would possibly involve reimplementation,
submitting to libmpeg2-dev and getting it accepted there.
and according to messages in this thread a related patch was
once alraedy rejected on libmpeg2-dev.
So if someone is willing to pursue this alternative path and has
time to do it now, thats fine but if not i think the only practical
solution is to revert, which i suspect ivan would be willing to
work on if we agree on the neccessarity
