The fix does indeed prevent the crash from happening for me, however, 
MPlayer still loses subs. When they vanish, they vanish until I seek, 
and stay until playback reaches another "magical" point that disables 
the subs again. 

Messages like these:
SPUasm: invalid frag len / len2: 1211 / 0
SPUasm: invalid fragment

..appear when the subtitles die.
